Built in 1616, Shalimar Garden is one of the most captivating gardens which show an epitome love of great Emperor Jahangir towards his beloved wife, Nurjahan. It covers an area of approximately 12.4 hectares. The structure of this garden lies in rectangular shape, 587 meters long and 251 meters wide. It is sloping from northern to southern and the highest point locates along the northeast side.
It has four terraces and an imposing fountain with the highest terrace is “Abode of Love" that was served only by the royal ladies and kings. The top terrace of the Shalimar garden was preserved for the Mughal Emperor and the royal ladies. In fact, top terrace was embellished beautifully among all the terraces of this garden. There is a tank on the top of the terrace made up of black marble which was once reserved as a banquet hall.
There are so many attractions in Shalimar Bagh Garden including several colourful fountains, shaded trees and numerous plenty of flowers that flourish in spring and autumn. Not only this, visitors can enjoy a light and sound show which is organized in the garden every evening during the period of May to October.
The garden is decorated with vibrant lights which look awesome at the evening in the shadow of moon. Originally, it was known the highest point of Mughals architecture but now it has come up as the most beautiful garden. The Shalimar Bagh is considered as the festively royal garden of Kashmir. The Emperor Jahangir was so amazed with the garden and he named it "one of the sights of Kashmir." It was declared as the main summer residence of Emperor Jahangir and Nur Jahan.
