The erstwhile name of shimla was Shyamala but the present day Shimla came into existence after the British invasion in the year 1819. Scottish civil servant Charles Pratt Kennedy has been built the first British cottage in shimla.

Prior to the year 1819, Shimla was under the governance of the Gurkhas. After defeating the battle at the hands of the Sikhs, the Gurjhas built several forts around the city.
Under the generalship of Major General 'Sir David Ochterlony, the British annexed the city from the hands of Gurkhas and then established it their ‘summer capital’ in 1864 because of its cool atmosphere.

After independence in the year 1947, Shimla was announced to be a capital of Punjab but in the year 1966 it was established as the capital of Himachal Pradesh.

Travel within city
Shimla is the most captivating hill station in India that catches a large number of tourists across the world. There are taxi services available at the airport. Due to the vertical slopes and roads there are less transport options for a traveler. However, the city has fewer travelling options and the locals usually travel on foot.

The local buses are the most preferred means of transport to reach here. It is a good way to get around the city and quite very inexpensive.

Cabs facility is available from the station to any other part of the city that can ply from Shimla to Delhi and Chandigarh.

Shimla is flooded with a wide of restaurants as well as dozens of fast food joints. Especially, these are found on the Mall Road and remain open from 10 am till 10 pm. Embassy Restaurant on Mall Road. Cafe Sol on Mall Road is famous for excellent Thai and Japanese cuisines. Himanis and The Pub on Mall Road is a bar-cum-restaurants that serves good food and great drinks.

Shimla is a tourist destination that has a wide range of articles from tin pots to henna and bangles. Mostly, tourists visit to buy Emporium and Tibetan Handicrafts on Mall road exclusively for carpets, shawls and unique Tibetan souvenirs that would the best for well made branded items.
