Kochi is famed as a large city in the state of the Kerala, presently, known as Cochin. It is referred to as 'God's Country' dotting with so many catch phrases associated with this one city that catches the attention of the tourists.

This city was widely acclaimed as a first European colonial settlement in all of India. Cochin remained incomplete in terms of success till the arrival of the Portuguese. It is believed that the Cochin district came into existence in the year 1102 AD after the break up of the Khulasekhara Empire.

There are several stories regarding the origin of the name of the city.

Kochi was considered the first place in India to have European settlement. The Portugese came to Cochin in 1503 and stayed till 1663. During it, they worked closely with the king of Cochin with treaty of peace. The grave of Vasco Da Gama, the popular traveler who discovered India, is also here.

After the Portuguese, the Dutch attacked Cochin, as per the order of Mysorean king, Hyder ali. After getting independence in the year 1947, Cochin was officially assigned as part of Kerala and today it comes one of the biggest business in the major city in the west coast of India. Kochi was the first city to join the Indian Union when it gained independence in 1947.

Travel within city
Travelling within the city is quite easy and comfortable and not so much expensive as several modes of commute are available in the town. You can opt for buses, auto rickshaws, taxis, and cabs while traveling in Kochi.

While travelling within the city, the priority is given to buses which are easy to available and cheap to buy. For example: the charges of Volvo buses of Rs 10 for the first five kilometers and Rs 2 for every additional kilometer.

Auto Rickshaw
Auto rickshaws are also the most preferred modes to commute from one to other destination. The best part of this mode is that one are free to travel anywhere at the night, however, no charges are imposed at night.

The next option is taxi as a mode of travelling which is easy accessible and easy to available in the city. Night charges are applicable with taxis and they charge 20% extra.

Kochi is not left behind from the other cities, brimming with restaurants catering to tourists of all budgets and tastes. Here, o ne can enjoy vegetarian options, tourists can go to New Anada Bhavan in Fort Kochi and Pai Dosa on M.G. Road in Ernakulam. Caza Maria on Boat Jetty Road is also famous for Chinese and Continental and sumptuous French dishes.
