The literal meaning of Dachigam is “ten villages” which were incorporated to form the Dachigam National Park, which is located among the most scenically beautiful areas of the sub-continent at a distance of 22 Kms from Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu & Kashmir. The park is famous in the world for its picturesque surrounding, scenic valley, and beautiful river with a total area of 141 square kilometers. Tourists from all parts of the world attracted to this Park during its autumn rutting season when the lower slopes and forests echo with its melodious calls. 
History
The Dachigam National Park is originally set up to ensure clean drinking water supply of the region. However, the history of the Park can be dated back to as early as 1910 during which time; it was under the care of Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir, which was later on taken over by the government authorities. However, in 1981, this park was declared as the national park of India.
Main Attraction
The Dachigam National Park is one of the blissful places of natural world amidst the forests of silver birch and conifer roams contains the rare Kashmir stag known as Hangul, last viable population in the world, characterized by its white rump patch and impressive spread of antlers. The park is broadly divided into two sectors – Upper Dachigam and Lower Dachigam with an area of 141 sq. Kms. The scenic beauty of rolling alpine pastures, deep ravines, steep wooded slopes and rocky outcrops encircled the Park. The other attractions of the Dachigam National Park are Himalayan black bear, markhor and ibex and varieties of Himalayan birds, colorful pheasants like crimson tragopan, the iridescent monal pheasant, the blood pheasant and the koklass pheasant; the golden eagle, bearded vulture, leopard, musk deer and many more.
Reaching There
Dachigam National Park is well connected by the roadways via metaled road but higher Dachigam is accessible only by foot. It is also connected by the railway network of India with its nearest rail junction at Jammu with a distance of 200 Kms only. Its nearest airport is located at Srinagar. |
