City palace is situated on the banks of Lake Pichola, started by Maharana Udai Singh , and was completed by his successors, started in 1559 – till 18th Century. It is the largest palace complex in Rajasthan, it is one of the architectural awesome sight. The city palace is the most visited tourist attraction of Udaipur. It has several palaces built within the complex. It is the fusion of Rajasthan and Mughal style of architecture and was built on a top hill including several historic monuments such as Lake pichola, The Jag Mandir, The Jagdish Temple, The Monsoon palace and the Neemach Mata temple.
City Palace is a marvelous collection of courtyards, pavilions, huge terraces, colorful corridors; it is the wonderful blend of Medieval, European and Chinese art. The striking palace is built in granite and marble. It comprises of several gates the Great Gate that is Bara Pol is the main gate to the City Palace complex. On passing, Bara Pol, there is triple arched gate which is called as “Tripolia” built in 1725, which is the entry from northern side.
The gap between this gate and the palace is lined with shops owned by craftsmen, artisans,antique shops. Between the two gates, eight marble arches are raised; it was believed that the Maharaja’s were weighed with silver and gold, which was then distributed amongst the poor people. This Gate is followed by the Hathi Gate, or the Elephant Gate, where elephant fights took place to test their power for the war.
