During the British ruled India, Calcutta was the capital of the nation. Later, New Delhi became the capital of India for some political reasons. At the time of British Raj, Calcutta was often renowned as 'the second city of the British Empire' in terms of fame, economy and importance. After British left India in the years 1947-1950, Calcutta still maintained its supreme power in terms of politics and economics. During the pre and the post Independence years, it was popular named as 'What Bengal thinks today, the rest of India thinks tomorrow.'
