The working of Indian Embassy in Praha, Czech Republic and Czech Embassy in India are the result of India's age old relations with Czechoslovakia when the Kingdom of Bohemia had trade relation with India during the medieval ages. However, the diplomatic relations between India and Czech Republic were established in 1947. The relations between Indian Embassy and Czech Embassy were further strengthened when the high level visits of great personalities of India like first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru paid a visit in 1955, Presidents Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Giani Zail Singh and R. Venkataraman visited Czechoslovakia in 1965, 1983 and 1988 respectively. The diplomatic relations between Indian Embassy and Czech Republic have been maintained even after bifurcation of Czechoslovakia in 1993. The cordial and friendly relations between Indian Embassy and Czech Embassy reflected when the President Vaclav Havel visited India to receive two prestigious awards of Indira Gandhi Peace Prize in 1994 and Mahatma Gandhi Peace Prize in January, 2004.
